What is NSFAS
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a bursary scheme that funds the education of South African students from poor and working-class families. NSFAS provides financial support to eligible students, covering tuition fees, accommodation, books, and other learning materials.
The nsfas portal provides information access to students 24/7 with transparency, making it convenient for the student to track his/her funding, Application status, and other details.
To access your NSFAS account, you’ll need your ID number and password. Log in via the NSFAS website to check your nsfas application status, update personal information, view funding history, and apply for funding for the next academic year.

To apply for nsfas and avail its benefits, The candidate must create their mynsfas account. To register for nsfas online application, you should follow these steps:
On the NSFAS website, look for the option My NSFAS. It is located at the top right corner of your screen.
Then, you will be directed to the page where you will get three options: Login, Create Profile, and Forgot Password.
Click on the option Create Profile and fill in the details such as First/Last Name as per ID Document, ID Number, Applicant’s Mail, and Contact Number.
Verify your Email Address by clicking on the email sent by NSFAS to your provided Email address.
Read the Terms and Conditions and click the tick box
Enter the Password and follow the requirements for a strong password, such as Having at least lowercase and capital letters, at least one number, and a length of at least eight characters.
Click on Captcha code and Select the option Create Profile.
Your registration request will be accepted if you have provided valid details according to your ID number.
NSFAS Login
After completing the Registration process, you have to log in to access the nsfas application form:
Visit the official website of NSFAS https://my.nsfas.org.za/
Click on MYNSFAS option on the right corner of the screen.
Enter Your ID Number and Password
Click on the Captcha code to proceed further
Click on the option login, and if the ID number and password are correct, you will be directed to the mynsfas dashboard.
NSFAS Online Application Form
After completing the login process, you will be directed to the NSFAS application portal.
Click on the option Apply Now, as shown in the picture above.
Fill in details such as what you are going to study, for which year you are applying, where you would like to study, and demographic information such as race, name of last high school, etc.
Then, submit information such as the Mother’s ID number and her first and last name and provide guardian information in the next section.
The last step will be to upload the required documents, such as a copy of your ID card, ID of Guardian, and proof of income (If applicable).
Then read the Terms and Conditions, click the section if you agree, and click submit.
Your application process is completed, and you can check it through the application tracker available on the portal.
NSFAS Application Requirements 2023-24
Your registered Phone Number or Email
The Household income of the candidate should be less than 350,000 per year.
Persons with disabilities should have a combined gross household income of less than R600,000 annually.
Income certificate
SASSA grant recipients are already eligible, and they won’t need to provide proof of income.

Candidates with any vulnerable issue and recognized as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a Vulnerable Child Declaration form.
The starting date for this bursary scheme is 28th September 2023. Candidates curious about the last date to apply for nfsas are told by the official website notification that the last date is 31st January 2024. Pros
It covers many courses at any educational institution in Africa.
It covers transportation costs within 40 kilometers.

Cons
It is not available for all African students as this is only eligible for financially backward class.
The funds can take a long time to be disbursed.
Orphan students face many obstacles in getting funds since the social workers must sign secondary documents.
It does not cover all postgraduate courses.
